This temple is dedicated to Isis. She is an enchantress known as the giver of life. She is also recognized as the protector of kings and the mother of god.  This temple was originally located along the Upper Nile. It had to be relocated to Agilika Island in 1970. This move was necessary to protect it from flooding caused by the construction of the Aswan Lower Dam.  It is incredible to think of the years and manpower involved in deconstructing,  moving, and reconstructing it!

This temple complex dates from the 26th Dynasty (664–525 B.C.), with additions through the Roman period.  It was one of the last temples built in the classical Egyptian style. It was also one of the final tributes to the goddess.  Pilgrims would come from all over the Mediterranean to worship Isis here.  Its towering silhouette leaves a lasting impression, and its unique architecture has jigsaw-like halls.
