Our Greece & Turkey Adventure!

The birthplace of the Olympic games, the playground of the Olympic Gods, the birthplace of the “big three” philosophers most influential to Western history (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle), and the cradle of democracy and Western literature. Why has it taken us so long for this visit?!

Our trip is divided into three parts: The “PRE TRIP’ is the Cappadocia & Ankara Extension, the “BASE TRIP” is Istanbul and the Greek Islands, and the “Post Trip” is Athens & the Peloponnese Extension.
Here we are in the airport in Chicago, ready to take off for Ankara! This will be an exciting trip!!

We are delighted to travel again with our friends Joe Sokul and Ellen Roney from Madison, WI. We all arrived in Ankara, Turkey, one day before the tour….to prevent potential problems and adjust to the timezone change (Ankara is 7 hrs. ahead of EST.)

The view of the rainbow from our Ankara Hilton hotel room. We hope….an omen for an excellent trip!!!

Our first night was a delightful walk through lovely tree-lined neighborhoods to the restaurant Masabasi Kebapcisi. It was fun to see such a vibrant and diverse restaurant and café scene along the way….safe, clean streets, pleasant people and orderly traffic.

Our appetizers are many small dishes served with lavash, a thin flatbread traditionally baked in a tandoor oven. Lavash is paper-thin compared to a tortilla.

What we did not know, was that the lavash was also to be used to remove the kabobs from the skewer! A couple sitting near us realized that we did not know the proper technique…and their daughter came to teach us! We had some laughs!!
