Living the Dream, One Trip at a Time

Nafplion, often regarded as one of the most beautiful towns in Greece, is a charming seaport city in the northeastern Peloponnese. Its picturesque setting along the Argolic Gulf, combined with its neoclassical architecture, cobblestone streets, and vibrant squares, makes it a popular destination for tourists like us.

Nafplion features charming Venetian homes and a picturesque harbor dominated by citadels. While the fortresses attest to a checkered military history, after independence from the Ottomans early in the 19th century, Nafplion became the first capital of liberated Greece (1823-1834.)

We stayed in Nafplion because it served as a gateway to the nearby ancient sites of Epidaurus and Mycenae. This Mediterranean charm really captured us….and although the temptation was to explore the area more on our own, sitting from the balcony of our room over looking Bourtzi Castle in the Argolic Gulf was just too tempting.

Bourtzi Castle was built by the Venetians in the 15th century to protect the city from pirate attacks and invasions by sea. Constructed with thick stone walls and surrounded by the sea, it is accessible only by boat. Over the centuries, it has served various purposes: a stronghold to a residence for executioners who carried out sentences in Nafplio’s Fortress, a hotel and a venue for cultural events. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction.

Its history traces back to ancient times when soldiers from the region participated in the Argonautic expedition and the Trojan War. The town declined during Roman times and flourished again during the Byzantine era. Frankish, Venetian, and Turkish conquerors also left their mark on Nafplion’s culture, architecture and traditions throughout the centuries.

The town is dominated by two impressive fortresses: Palamidi, perched high above, offering panoramic views, and Acronafplia, the ancient fortress overlooking the town. We really did not have enough time here to visit them….but it is disappointing to be so close and miss major features of this city.

We also did not get a chance to ride the boat to Bourtzi Castle, but this pic was taken from our room as we sipped champagne and relaxed with friends! as we viewed the castle!

We enjoyed outdoor dining one evening, which seemed magical. The six of us were among the trees as the sun was setting and great food was being delivered! Being pampered was especially appreciated as we are wearing down after almost a month on the road!

Nafplion is a prosperous city of 40,000 permanent inhabitants and supposedly has a tourist industry that never sleeps. In our case, it was more of a relaxation point along the way….this would definitely be one place I would like to return….at the beginning of a trip, rather than at the end when we are tired out!!
