Tropea is a small town on the east coast of Calabria. It’s known for its clifftop historic center, beaches and prized red onions. This is a spectacular seaside town.  It has been called the ‘Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea’ and is certainly the most visually spectacular site we have seen on this trip. The old city is set atop gorgeous tall cliffs, overlooking expansive sandy beaches with clear turquoise water. This coastline is called the Coast of the Gods.

This is one of the most picturesque cliff-side villages on Calabria’s Tyrrhenian coast, and is considered one of Italy’s best kept secrets. Legend has it that Tropea was founded by Hercules, who is honored in the name of the main square, Piazza Ercole.

The Tropea region has a mild climate with plenty of sunshine, the ideal conditions growing Tropea red onions. The onions are typically harvested in the summer months, and they are often dried and braided before being sold. They are known for their sweet flavor, delicate texture, and deep red color. Tropea red onions are a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) product, which means that they can only be grown in this specific region using traditional methods.

Tropea’s historical center is a maze of cobblestone, streets lined with grand 17th- and 18th-century palazzi, cafes, gelato, and artisan shops.  Legend has it that Tropea was founded by Hercules, who is honored in the name of the main square, Piazza Ercole.

Tan stone buildings are built into the cliffs overlooking the long white beach and bright clear turquoise water. There are gorgeous views in every direction.

This was also where we celebrated Judy’s 79th Birthday! Dario gave her several bracelets and a cake. That was after she dipped her toes in the Tyrrhenian Sea!

A few years back Tropea was voted the fairest of them all: the most beautiful of all the many beautiful small towns in Italy… a worthy winner indeed.
