Sremski Karlovci

Sremski Karlovci was a political center in the 17th century and a favorite place of the Hapsburg ruler, Maria Theresa. We took a walking tour of the lovely village and visited a museum dedicated to honey and wine.

The Museum of Beekeeping and Wine Cellar Zivanovic is where we enjoyed our wine tasting. A specialty was Bermet wine….a dessert wine from northern Serbia; we also tasted an assortment of different whites and reds. They are good wines, but not many Syrian wines make it to the US.

We saw pictures of Prince Charles and Camilla on the wall during their visit here. Serbia is a “post-trip” for us, so we are down to five travelers from the 16 who were in our base-trip group.

The Velika Remeta Monastery dating to the 13th century, is one of 16 medieval monasteries clustered in this mountainous region. Although destroyed twice, it has been restored and offers a tranquil environment for contemplation. Every square inch of the wall is covered in hand-painted frescoes!
