Postojna Caves

Part of Slovenia’s natural splendors are hidden under the surface. We visited this absolutely captivating 16-mile cave system…..an amazing subterranean world of karst limestone.

Our tour started with a 3.7 km underground train ride which took us to the start of a fascinating paradise shaped by tiny droplets over millions of years.

This was just breathtaking…..there were even giant “halls” where Murano-glass chandeliers were hung for concerts and events! Pictures do not even begin to do it justice!

This 5-meter tall bright-white stalagmite became the symbol of the cave. The water slowly dripped, forming a thin layer of flowstone with a shiny white color. (Did not notice while we were there that it is somewhat of a phallic symbol!)

In addition to the expansive natural beauty, the cave has this little creature, the olm (white dragon!), which is completely adapted to life in the dark, so no need for eyes! It can live 100 years and even go without food for several years. We saw one in a tank, but could not get a good pic, so stole this from the web!
