Finland

Tucked in northern Europe between Sweden and Russia, Finland is a country defined by its deep connection to nature. About three-quarters of it is covered by forest, and its famous “thousand lakes” — actually more than 180,000 — making water a constant presence, whether in the city or the countryside.

In Helsinki, we saw sleek architecture, design shops, and cozy cafés coexisting with peaceful harbors and quiet walking paths. As we traveled 750+ miles north, to the region of Lapland (190 miles above the Arctic Circle), the pace slowed to the rhythm of reindeer and husky dogs and the awe of the Northern Lights. The Finnish love for sauna, nature, and solitude seemed part of daily life.

It is easy to see why Finland is often ranked among the world’s happiest countries. There’s a sense of order, of things done thoughtfully and well. From the clean design of a coffee cup to the calm order of public spaces, there’s care in every detail. Life feels unhurried, balanced, and quietly beautiful — a reminder that doing small things well can make everyday life feel extraordinary. I would not mind being Finnish at all!

We’ve had the pleasure of visiting Finland on two separate occasions…and these are some of our memories:
