Lithuania’s oldest city…….

Klaipėda, Lithuania’s only seaport, is a city where the past and present seem to blend seamlessly.  I wish we could have spent more time in this charming city, but it was essentially our hotel stop for two nights while we explored the nearby Curonian Spit.

Founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1252, it long stood as a strategic fortress and trading post at the crossroads of Germanic and Baltic cultures. For centuries, it shifted between Prussian, German, and Lithuanian control, leaving behind a unique architectural mix of timber-framed buildings and Hanseatic-style warehouses.

Our hotel was in the Old Town area, and these are sights we enjoyed along our walk:

After World War II, Klaipėda was incorporated into Soviet Lithuania and became an important industrial and naval hub. Today, it is a lively maritime city with a vibrant old town, ferry connections to the Curonian Spit, and a growing arts and cultural scene.
